A Continental IO-550-A with auto-lean, as certified.
Engine's History
This engine was first installed in the new Bonanza aircraft, and is the number one engine for replacing other engines.
Propeller
A Hartzell 3-bladed, full feathering propeller especially designed for the Missile conversion with low noise and high performance.
Relocated Battery
Conversion includes a new battery box located 54 in. aft of the original, holding two 35 amp batteries supported on a new battery shelf.
Weight & CG
The takeoff weight is 3,200 lbs. The conversion adds 250 lbs. to the empty weight, moving the CG forward ¾".
Cowling Change
The cowling is replaced with a new 231 style cowl that has the new clearance bulges and cooling inlet built in.
Airframe vs. Power
The airplane still operates within the original flight envelope, but at the top of the green arc.
Stall speed
The stall speed increases from 60 kts to 61 kts - Only one knot. This is due to the increased gross weight.
The Conversion
The 300 Missile is a Mooney M20J (201/205) with a Continental IO-550-A engine and a Hartzell 3-bladed full-feathering propeller installed, which can increase the glide ratio up to 16-to-1.
The Name
The 300 Missile is named for the new 300 hp engine that climbs and performs like a missile.
Certification
The 305 Rocket STC represented a 2½ year certification effort, including over 1,000 flight test hours. The 300 Missile STC took an additional two years, and over 250 flight hours to certify. The 300 Missile passed all FAA flight test requirements including spin tests, flutter tests, load tests, cooling tests and noise tests. These two STC installations are identical, except the Rocket is turbocharged and the Missile is non-turbocharged.
Service Ceiling
The service ceiling remains at 18,800 ft. However, at that altitude, the Missile's climb rate is still 400 ft/min.
Top Cruise Seed and Fuel Burn
At 18,800 ft, the cruise speed is 175 kts true and the fuel burn is 9.8 gal/hr. At 10,500 ft, the cruise speed is 185 kts true with a fuel burn of 14.8 gal.hr. At 8,500 ft, a top speed of 200 kts was recorded on a 205 "Ram Air" Missile.
Ram Air Cowl
A new ram air cowl is now standard on the Missile to increase MAP and top cruise speed.
Gross Weight Increase
The 300 Missile is now certified to 3,200 lbs. gross weight.
